I have nearly 40 years experience in the Construction Industry. I started work as an Engineer and Land Surveyor for a major Excavation / Demolition / Quarrying Group. I then transferred profession to become a Quantity Surveyor with a Building Contractor then a Groundwork Sub-contractor.
In Professional Practice, I have combined traditional quantity surveying functions, Contract Administrator and Employer’s Agent roles for Employers in the commercial, retail and domestic sectors. I carry out estimating, surveying, planning and managing projects for Contractors and Specialist Sub-contractors, and Specialist Maintenance Contractors.
I have been employed on schemes ranging from large national projects down to small domestic extensions. While continuing my professional work as a quantity surveyor I have increasingly specialised in Legal Practice as Expert Witness in litigation and arbitration, with court appointments as Single Joint Expert. My Expert Witness Appointments have included work arising from construction contracts and claims, insolvency work, professional negligence claims and expanded into associated personal injury claims.
I am a Practising Adjudicator in construction disputes.
In addition to resolving boundary disputes I also act as a surveyor under the Party Wall etc 1996 Act, drawing up and agreeing awards between building owners and neighbours. As a Quantity Surveyor working closely with Employers, Architects, Engineers, Contractors and Sub-contractors, I possess a thorough and practical knowledge of the construction industry. This is combined with years of experience with Practitioners and Litigation / Arbitration and Adjudication experience and training with lawyers which I draw upon in the application of my expertise as a contractual advisor, claims consultant, Expert Witness and lawyer’s advisor in arbitration and litigation. I am a trained Adjudicator appointed in dispute under the Construction Act
It’s the combination of the human element with the physical world that excited me as a child and excites me today. As a child it was “big diggers” and I realised my dream with my first job when started work around them. Now, there’s no greater buzz than being part of a team on a successful construction project. My latest involvement on a major project was the Sage Music Centre on the banks of the Tyne – I take every opportunity sharing it with family and friends.
But there’s equal pleasure to be had from arranging for finding, fixing and curing the niggling leak and knowing there’s a satisfied customer.
But sometimes things do go wrong, the human element is disproportionate but all-consuming to the individuals involved. Whether it’s a boundary dispute, a building that cost too much or wasn’t finished on time, a professional who hasn’t lived up to the required standard or personal injury fairness has to prevail. By my devoting attention to practical detail and maintaining consideration of the personal emotions of those directly involved I can guarantee a successful outcome.
In addition to family life, I enjoy a wide range of music where I’ll be seen at concerts and festivals (usually with pint in hand) and theatre of all types. I am often found walking over the hills in the Dales which provides increased opportunities to expand my interest in photography. When time allows I exercise my body on a badminton court in North Leeds. At the present moment I’m exercising my mind at the School of Philosophy, and I declare myself to be the HAPPIEST SURVEYOR I KNOW!
